Promised Land: From Dunedin to the Dunstan GoldfieldsPromised Land: From Dunedin to the Dunstan Goldfields
Author: Grahame Sydney.  Published 2010 by Penguin New Zealand. Softback.  Price: $NZ50.00.
In 1862 the barren Interior of Otago, New Zealand was largely unknown, called the ‘Wasteland,’ and was home to a small number of newly-settled pastoralists. However when in August two prospectors announced they had struck gold, this sparse, inhospitable region suddenly became magnet to tens of thousands of hopeful men.
Using several surviving diaries of gold prospectors,  ‘Promised Land’ is a comprehensive and graphic account of this remarkable period, telling the story of the virtual discovery of what we now call ‘Central Otago’, liberally illustrated both with period photographs and many by the author.
