Grahame Sydney as Guest Speaker at National Conference

Southland Times, 20 March 2012.

The Photography Society of New Zealand’s 60th national conference will be held in Invercargill next month, hosted by the Southland Photographic Society.  Guest speakers include artist Grahame Sydney, astrophotographer Stephen Voss and nature photographer Kevin Tyree.

The conference will be at Ascot Park Hotel from April 25 to 29, 2012.

New Zealand society spokesman Simon Woolf said digital photography was leading a resurgence in memberships as people joined clubs to get a better understanding of their cameras and taking photos.

“Even advances with mobile phones, some of them can take quality images”, he said.

“Fifteen years ago clubs might have been considered `grey brigades’ but we have seen huge change in membership as more young people take an interest,” he said.

There was a particular interest in family photography but a new growing trend was landscape nature photography.

“We have some talented nature photographers in the country,” Woolf said.

“What it takes to be a good nature photographer is patience, stealth, research and understanding the outdoors.”

It is not the first time Invercargill has hosted the conference.

Already 150 people have registered for it, but about 300 people are expected to take part.

The conference is open to non-members but they do need to register.
